About the Piece

Known in English as Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, this piece comes from the final movements of J. S. Bach’s Cantata BWV 147 (1723). The serene melody originates with the 17th-century composer Johann Schop (Werde munter, mein Gemüte), which Bach set in a flowing 9/8 texture over gently pulsing triplets. It has been widely performed in church services and concerts, and became especially famous in the 20th century through Myra Hess’s piano version.

Its calm motion and heartfelt text (“Jesus remains my joy”) have made it a favourite for weddings, Christmas services, and moments of reflection. The music’s steady rhythm and warm harmonies create a quiet sense of devotion, offering listeners a simple, prayerful beauty that never seems to fade.
