About the Hymn

Originating as the German hymn “Beim frühen Morgenlicht,” it was translated into English by Edward Caswall (1814–1878). Joseph Barnby’s tune LAUDES DOMINI (1838–1896) gives the text its serene morning character.

Its refrain “May Jesus Christ be praised” turns the first thoughts of the day to the Lord. Many congregations cherish it as a graceful morning or opening hymn.
