About the Piece

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed Marche Slave (Op. 31) in 1876 for a charity concert supporting the Serbian cause during the Serbo-Turkish War. Drawing on traditional Serbian folk melodies, he created one of his best-known orchestral marches.

Its memorable themes and bold, march-like rhythm have kept Marche Slave popular in concert halls for well over a century. Today it remains a favourite orchestral work, admired for its stirring melodies and dramatic character.
