About the Piece

Long attributed to J. S. Bach, this Minuet is now generally accepted as the work of the Dresden composer Christian Petzold (1677–1733). It appears in the 1725 Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach and is a clear, elegant example of the Baroque minuet in 3/4 time, built in simple binary form (AABB) with balanced, answering phrases in G major.

Its graceful melody and tidy structure have made it a favourite teaching piece and a popular choice for recitals and weddings. The tune’s singable lines and steady dance pulse offer a gentle introduction to Baroque style that listeners recognise instantly.
