About the Hymn
Scottish poet Elizabeth Clephane (1830–1869) wrote “Beneath The Cross Of Jesus” as a quiet meditation on the shelter found in the Saviour’s love. It is paired here with Frederick C. Maker’s tune ST. CHRISTOPHER (1844–1927), long associated with the hymn. Its tender words guide worshippers to the foot of the Cross, where sin is forgiven and weary hearts find rest. Many churches sing it during Lent and Holy Week as they contemplate Christ’s passion.
