About the Hymn
This English text by John Mason Neale (1818–1866) is a translation of the ancient Latin hymn “Urbs beata Jerusalem.” In this setting it is sung to Henry Purcell’s stately tune WESTMINSTER ABBEY (1659–1695), giving it a noble, processional character. The hymn celebrates Jesus Christ as the cornerstone of His Church.
