About the Hymn

Charles Wesley (1707–1788) wrote Rejoice, The Lord Is King in the mid-18th century as a bold proclamation of Christ’s sovereign reign. Its jubilant text is frequently paired with the stately tune Gopsal by George Frideric Handel (1685–1759), whose confident melodic lines amplify the hymn’s royal theme.

Celebrating the risen and ascended Lord, the hymn calls worshippers to lift their hearts in trust and joy, for He rules with justice and mercy. Its strong refrain and triumphant tone make it a favourite for Easter, Ascension, and general services, where the Church rejoices that Jesus is King and His Kingdom cannot fail.
