About the Hymn
Cecil Frances Alexander (1818–1895) wrote this simple, moving meditation on Christ’s sacrifice outside the city walls. It is sung here to William Horsley’s tune HORSLEY (1774–1858). Gentle and direct, the hymn draws worshippers to remember the Saviour’s love at the Cross. It is especially cherished during Passiontide and Holy Week.
