About the Hymn

Break Thou the Bread of Life was written by Mary Artemisia Lathbury (1841–1913) in 1877 for the Chautauqua movement. It is most often sung to William F. Sherwin’s tune BREAD OF LIFE (1826–1888). The hymn draws on John 6, pointing to Christ as the “bread of life” and to the nourishment found in God’s Word.

Because of its themes, it is often used at Bible studies and communion services. Its prayerful lines invite worshippers to seek not only knowledge but also spiritual strength and renewal through Scripture.
