About the Hymn
John Samuel Bewley Monsell (1811–1875) wrote this hymn in 1863, inspired by Paul’s words “Fight the good fight of faith.” It is usually sung to the tune Duke Street, a noble and steady melody often attributed to John Hatton (d. 1793). The hymn calls believers to courage and endurance in their walk with Christ. Its strong message and sturdy tune have made it a lasting part of Anglican and Protestant worship.
