About the Piece
Edvard Grieg composed Morning Mood (Norwegian: Morgenstemning) in 1875 as incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. Later arranged as the opening movement of Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46, it paints daybreak with a lyrical flute and oboe melody above gentle string figures. Its flowing phrases and clear harmonies have made it one of Grieg’s most recognisable tunes. Often heard in concerts, films, adverts, and cartoons, Morning Mood is loved for its calm, atmospheric depiction of sunrise. The music’s steady swell and graceful melody suggest light spreading across a quiet landscape, giving listeners a fresh, hopeful start to the day.
