About the Piece
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) wrote Morning Mood as part of his incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt in 1874-75, later including it in Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46). Although often associated with a peaceful sunrise in Norway, the music originally accompanies a sunrise in the Moroccan desert. A favourite in concerts, films, and television, its calm, pastoral character has long been associated with the start of a new day.
