About the Piece
Gabriel Fauré wrote Pavane in 1887, first for solo piano and soon after in a popular orchestral version (Op. 50), sometimes performed with an optional chorus to words by Robert de Montesquiou. The piece nods to the stately Renaissance dance of the same name and was associated with the French patroness Countess Greffulhe, whose salons helped make it fashionable. Its lilting melody and gently pulsing accompaniment created one of Fauré’s most enduring works. The music carries a poised, wistful mood—graceful rather than showy—making it a favourite at concerts and on recordings. Its calm rise and fall, subtle shading, and memorable tune invite quiet listening, offering a short, refined moment of beauty.
