About the Piece

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Russian Folksong comes from his set Ten National Airs with Variations, Op. 107 (1818–1819), originally written for flute (or violin) and piano. No. 7 in the set takes a well-known Russian melody and treats it with Beethoven’s clear phrasing and simple variation writing, which is why this short piece appears so often in teaching collections.

The music has a steady, folk-dance character and a memorable, singable line. Its direct charm and gentle contrasts make it appealing in recitals and practice alike, offering a compact glimpse of Beethoven’s interest in traditional tunes.
