About the Hymn
John Fawcett (1740–1817) wrote this hymn in 1782 after choosing to stay with his small Yorkshire church rather than leave for a larger one. Its message of unity in Christ is most often paired with the tune Dennis, adapted from a melody by Hans Georg Naegeli (1773–1836) and arranged by Lowell Mason. It is often sung at communion, church gatherings, and times of farewell. The gentle words and simple tune remind believers of the bond they share in Christ, a fellowship that continues even when they are apart.
