About the Piece

Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) composed his Symphony No. 94 in G major, known as the Surprise Symphony, in 1791 during his first visit to London. The famous theme comes from the gentle second movement, interrupted by a sudden loud chord that is said to have been intended to surprise the audience.

Its simple melody and unexpected musical joke have made the Surprise Symphony one of Haydn's best-known works. A favourite in concerts, teaching collections, and recordings, it remains one of the most recognisable themes of the Classical period.
