About the Piece
Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) composed the overture to his opera The Thieving Magpie (La gazza ladra) for its premiere at La Scala in 1817. Although the opera is performed less often today, its lively overture soon became popular as a concert piece, especially for its brilliant march theme. Its memorable melody and energetic rhythm have made The Thieving Magpie overture a favourite in concerts, recordings, and films. A fine example of Rossini's gift for writing music that is lively, dramatic, and instantly recognisable.
