About the Piece
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) composed his Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13, in 1798, publishing it the following year. Nicknamed Pathétique, probably by the publisher with Beethoven's approval, it was one of his earliest great successes and helped establish his reputation as a composer for the piano. The famous theme featured in this arrangement comes from the sonata's expressive second movement, one of Beethoven's best-loved melodies. A favourite in concerts, recordings, and films, it remains one of his most recognisable piano works.
