About the Piece

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) wrote Trepak, also known as the Russian Dance, for Act II of his ballet The Nutcracker, first performed in 1892. Based on the fast-paced Ukrainian and Russian folk dance tradition, it is one of the ballet's shortest and most exciting numbers.

Its energetic rhythm and sparkling melody bring a burst of excitement to every performance of The Nutcracker. Heard in concert halls and theatres around the world each Christmas, the dance is instantly recognisable for its speed and exuberance.
