About the Hymn

This hymn began as the Latin Gloria, laus et honor by Theodulf of Orléans (c. 820). John Mason Neale translated it into English in the 19th century, and it is most often sung to the tune St. Theodulph, written by Melchior Teschner (1584–1635). The words recall the Triumphal Entry, when crowds welcomed Jesus as King.

It has become one of the best-known Palm Sunday hymns, often sung in procession with palm branches. Its steady rhythm and joyful tone give worshippers the sense of joining that first crowd, praising Christ at the start of Holy Week.
