About the Hymn
Judson W. Van DeVenter (1855–1939) wrote this hymn in 1896 after yielding to God’s call to Christian service. The tune Surrender was composed by Winfield S. Weeden (1847–1908), who also helped spread it in revival meetings. Its message of giving everything to Christ has made it one of the best-known altar call hymns. The hymn’s heartfelt words and gentle melody continue to inspire devotion and commitment.
