About the Hymn
John Henry Newman (1801–1890) wrote this hymn as part of his poem *The Dream of Gerontius* (1865). The tune Gerontius was composed by John Bacchus Dykes (1823–1876), one of Victorian England’s leading hymn writers. Its majestic words praise God’s plan of redemption.
