About the Hymn
George Duffield Jr. (1818–1888) wrote this hymn after the death of his friend Dudley Tyng, whose last words were “Let us all stand up for Jesus.” The rousing tune Webb was composed by George J. Webb (1803–1887). Its strong martial imagery and bold call to faith have inspired Christians for over 150 years. The hymn’s energy and courage have made it a standard in worship across many traditions.
