About the Hymn

Edwin Hatch (1835–1889) wrote this hymn as a quiet prayer to the Holy Spirit. Its short verses are usually sung to the tune Trentham, composed by Robert Jackson (1840–1914). Each verse asks for new life, pure love, and a closer walk with God.

The hymn’s gentle words make it a favourite in times of reflection, prayer, and devotion. Its lasting appeal comes from its simple but powerful request: that God’s Spirit would live and work within the believer.
