About the Hymn
Knowles Shaw (1834–1878) wrote this hymn, drawing on Psalm 126:6 - “he that goeth forth and weepeth… shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” The tune was composed by George A. Minor (1845–1904) and soon became popular in American revival songbooks. Its bright refrain gave energy to camp meetings and harvest celebrations, where it was sung with joy and hope. The song has remained a favourite in gospel traditions, combining Biblical imagery with a lively and memorable tune.
